Not-So-Quiet-Time: Acts 1

At-Home Bible Guide for the Week of 9/7

Day 1: Verses 1-5
Jesus’ work didn’t stop at the resurrection. After being raised, He shared, presented proofs of his resurrection, spent time with his people, and taught. That is how Jesus spent his last 40 days on earth. As Jesus’ followers, his priorities provide a picture of how we should live as well. Do your priorities look like his? How can you tell? What is one area that needs attention?

Day 2: Verses 6-11
In this passage, the apostles want to know the details of God’s plan. But Jesus encourages them to focus more on doing the Spirit-empowered work to which they were called. And after Jesus ascends, the disciples have to be reminded again to stop just looking into the sky. Instead they are to remember that Jesus is coming back, and get to work. We don’t always need to know more, sometimes we need to go more. What is one concrete way that you can get to work for the kingdom today?

Day 3: Verses 12-14
Jesus had told the disciples not to leave Jerusalem, but that didn’t mean that they were supposed to sit on their hands. Waiting doesn’t mean being idle. They got to work: the essential work of prayer. Why is it important that God’s people pray together? What would it look like for you, your family, and our church to be devoted to prayer?

Day 4: Verses 15-20
The disciples were still waiting for the Spirit, but that doesn’t mean that the Spirit wasn’t working. He was working through his Word. While they were waiting and praying, Peter got to work preaching. He was leaning on what the Holy Spirit had already said in the Psalms. As long as we have the Bible, we always have access to God’s clear voice. How does it encourage you to know that you have access to God’s voice? If the Spirit speaks through the Bible, how should that impact our habits regarding the Bible in our lives?

Day 5: Verses 21-26
When the people heard God’s Word, they discovered that it required action. We want to be hearers and doers of the Word. The apostles saw a key task that needed to be addressed: replace Judas. God’s ancient Word spoke to the apostles’ current lives, and they acted in response. And God’s Word still speaks to us today. What is one way that you can respond rightly to God’s Word today?

Catechism Connection: WSC 1-2
The Shorter Catechism famously begins by asking, “What is the chief end of man?” or “What is the main purpose of mankind?” The answer, “to glorify God and enjoy Him forever,” is especially helpful because it’s short and memorable. But how do we know how to live out our purpose? The Bible is “the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him” (WSC 2). The Bible is not just an old, religious book. It isn’t just a theology manual or list of rules. It is God’s own words for us. And, in it, He shows us how to honor Him and find joy. Just like the apostles listened to Christ’s instructions, we too must listen to what He has said.
