Not-So-Quiet-Time: Acts 5

At-Home Bible Guide for the Week of 10/5
Day 1: Verses 1-11
Looking at the church only in Acts 1-4 can give us the idea that the church was perfect back then. Thankfully, God included Ananias and Saphira in the record in Acts 5. Yes, the Holy Spirit was working. Yes, the Lord was saving. Yes, the people were sharing and praying and preaching. But sin was still crouching at the door. And sin still had consequences. This passage ends by saying that “great fear came upon the whole church” because of how God had dealt with sin among his people. Therefore, we must never take sin lightly. What can we do today to see our sin in the same way God does?
Day 2: Verses 12-16
The people held the apostles in “high esteem” (5:13). The miracles that they did by the power of God caused people to want to hear what they said. And God used the apostles in amazing ways that helped the people understand that they spoke for God. While we are not apostles, it is still true that what we do gives credibility to what we say. We may not be doing miracles, but our lives should still show God’s power. Does the way you live make people want to hear the gospel message?
Day 3: Verses 17-26
In the passage, we see who is really in charge. The religious leaders arrested the apostles, but God sent an angel to free them. And he instructed them to go back out to the temple to preach. God had proven that He was in control, but it still might have been a challenge for the apostles to go right back to what got them arrested in the first place. Today, pray that God will help you to keep following Him faithfully even when there are challenges.
Day 4: Verses 27-32
“We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching” (5:28). No matter what came at the apostles, they kept on sharing Jesus. They did this so much that the religious leaders felt that they had filled the whole city with the Good News. What would it look like for you to fill your home, school, workplace, or neighborhood with the best message of all time?
Day 5: Verses 33-42
God’s plans never fail. God never loses. God will accomplish his purposes through his people. Gamaliel said it perfectly, “If it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them.” That doesn’t mean there will not be suffering (5:41), but that we can count it joy to suffer for the Name. How does knowing that God cannot be stopped encourage you as you seek to follow Him today?
Catechism Connection: WSC 5-6
Though the word “Trinity” is not found in the Bible, the Bible clearly speaks of the Trinity. We can see that in Acts 5. The Holy Spirit is God (5:3-4). Jesus is God (5:31). The Father is God (5:30). There is only one God (WSC 5), and that God is three persons: “These three are one God, the same in substance and equal in power and glory” (WSC 6).
