Not-So-Quiet-Time: Acts 2

At-Home Bible Guide for the Week of 9/14
Day 1: Verses 1-13
The Holy Spirit came! Jesus fulfilled his promise. And it is important to see that the church had been obedient in waiting. They were gathered, so when the Spirit came, all the devout men could come together at that spot. There were two responses to the gathered church’s Spirit-empowered speaking: amazement and mocking. But everyone wanted to know, “What does this mean?” The Holy Spirit still works today. Are we working together to share his message?
Day 2: Verses 14-21
Peter responded to the doubts and curiosity with just the right tool: Scripture. These were “devout” men and so it makes sense that Peter would make a case for them from the Prophets. Peter was essentially asking, “Do you really believe what you say you believe?” He knew the Word and he knew the people. The Holy Spirit can help us fit those things together to share the Good News today. Ask God to give you wisdom and insight to share Him in the right way today.
Day 3: Verses 22-36
Here Peter explicitly shares the gospel. Jesus lived, died, and rose according to the perfect plan of God. God has a definite plan (2:23). He outlined it 1000 years earlier in Psalm 16. And now we can all know with certainty that Jesus is Lord and Christ. Today, we can be fully confident that God still accomplishes his plans perfectly. How can knowing that God’s perfect plans never fail help you live for Him today?
Day 4: Verses 37-41
The gospel is Good News, but it can also cut to the heart. When you share the truth, God uses it to do the work only He can do. But it isn’t always quick and easy. Did you see that Peter had to use many words and continue to exhort the people to respond? God is faithful, but we cannot presume on his timing. Keep reaching out to the lost. Keep sharing. Don’t give up. Because, at the right time, God will save.
Day 5: Verses 42-47
Those who are changed by the gospel live changed lives. We should be “devoted to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” This looks very much like what we see the believers doing in chapter 1. Do you think this is how people would describe our lives today? If not, what needs to change?
Catechism Connection: WSC 3-4, 7-8
In WSC 7-8, we see what Acts 2 showed us: God’s perfect plans can never be derailed. He providentially works out all things according to his purposes (WSC 8). In his perfect wisdom, He carries out “his eternal purpose, according to the counsel of his will, by which, for his own glory, he has foreordained everything that ever happens” (WSC 7). And we can trust Him as He works out his plans because the Bible shows us what He is like: “God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth” (WSC 4). He works out all things for the good of those He loves and has called (Rom 8:38).
