Not-So-Quiet-Time: Will Your House Serve the Lord? (Joshua)

At-Home Bible Guide for the Week of 10/4
Day 1: Joshua 24:14-15
Joshua had faithfully followed God and led the people to take ownership of the Promised Land. But the real battle was just getting started. Joshua called God’s people to put away all idols and invest their lives in serving the God who had saved and strengthened them. And he was going to lead by example. Joshua spoke for his house: whatever happened anywhere else, his house would serve the Lord. Is this your settled conviction? Ask the Lord to help you serve Him and to lead the people He has given you to do the same.
Day 2: Joshua 1:1-9
Yesterday, we looked at Joshua’s commitment and example near the end of his life. Today, we are looking at how his leadership started. After Moses died, God put Joshua in charge. God promised to stick with Joshua, and He gave Joshua a command: “Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you” (7). Joshua would need strength and courage in order to carefully obey all that God had given in his Word. Joshua couldn’t pick and choose what he liked. He couldn’t leave some parts until a later date. God called him to carefully obey. And God gives us that same call today. Ask Him to empower you to carefully follow everything in his Word.
Day 3: Joshua 1:10-18
Joshua’s call to the people was to remember the word of God delivered through Moses (13). Things were going to be difficult and different for them as they entered a new conflict in a new land. But one thing would remain: God’s truth was to rule their lives. Our lives can be busy and challenging too. Thank God for leading through his Word.
Day 4: Joshua 4:1-14
The people were headed into a conflict. There were important people like priests doing important work with God’s ark. But do you know who was on the Lord’s mind? The children. The biggest battle to be fought by Joshua wasn’t going to be at Jericho. It was going to be for the hearts of Israel’s children. And so Joshua instructed the people to make monuments to help their children remember what the Lord did that day. Adults today are busy too. But don’t forget that God’s priority for families is discipleship and worship. Ask Him to help your family remember Him today and as you move forward.
Day 5: Joshua 4:15-24
Here we are reminded of the job description God has given to fathers. Who are the children intended to ask about the stones? Their fathers (21). And who should be ready to share about God’s great work? Their fathers. This doesn’t minimize the important roles of mothers or grandparents; they are to teach and lead too. Instead, it shows that God has given dads to kids for discipleship. Thank God for the way He designed families. And ask Him to help your family seek his face together.
Catechism Connection: 57-62
The ancient Israelites set up stone monuments to help their families remember God. One of our “monuments” is the weekly Sabbath Day. And remembering the Sabbath each week as a day of worship and rest stands out and gives us opportunities to share about Christ.
Monthly Memory: Ephesians 4:4-6
There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
