Not-So-Quiet-Time: 2 Corinthians 2-3

At-Home Bible Guide for the Week of 10/18

Day 1: 2 Corinthians 2:1-11
Paul worked to lead the church to obey in everything (9). This was difficult and the church experienced pain because of it. However, this obedience was worth it. And in the end, this conflict was to be resolved through forgiveness and restoration (7-8). Love doesn’t minimize sin or error. Instead, it clearly and lovingly confronts sin to help bring about unity and godliness. Today, just as in Paul’s day, Satan would love to disrupt our unity and godliness (11). Ask God to help you to firmly and lovingly stand for truth for the good of the church and your family.

Day 2: 2 Corinthians 2:12-17
We are commissioned by Christ to speak his Word (17). Some people won’t get it and many won’t like it (16), but God is always leading us perfectly to make Him know (14). We may not always know or understand how God is working. And there may be seasons when our “spirits [are] not at rest” (13), but God leads us nonetheless. Tell God that you trust Him. And ask Him to help you trust Him more and more.

Day 3: 2 Corinthians 3:1-3
In our modern world credentials matter. People need licenses, degrees, and recommendations. And there is nothing wrong with making sure that a doctor or teacher knows what they are doing. However, in this passage, Paul makes it clear that the most important credential for believers, missionaries, pastors, and church leaders is the work of the Holy Spirit (3). In Corinth, God was convicting people of sin and making them more like Him. Ask that He would do that in your life, in the life of your family, and in the church.

Day 4: 2 Corinthians 3:4-11
In this section, Paul compares the glory of God’s law with the glory of the Spirit. The Law and Spirit are not at odds, but the work of the Spirit is so amazing that the Law cannot compare to it. The Law gives the diagnosis: we are dead in sin. The Spirit does the operation: making us alive in Christ. The Law showed us how sinful we are. The Spirit gives us Christ’s own righteousness. It is important to remember that the Law is good and we must seek to obey the Lord and please Him. But we must also remember that Christianity is defined, not by the work of Christians like us, but by the work of Christ. Praise God!

Day 5: 2 Corinthians 3:12-18
Do you know how you were saved? Christ showed you who He really is—He removed the veil (14). You had a “hardened mind,” but God broke through and gave you life. And do you know how you grow? The Spirit transforms us into his image and “this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit” (18). Worship the saving God.

Catechism Connection: 35
God sanctifies us by transforming us from one degree of glory to another. Step by step, He makes us more like Himself. This sanctification is “the work of God’s free grace by which we are renewed in our whole person in the image of God and by which we are enabled more and more to die to sin and live to righteousness” (WSC 35).

Monthly Memory: Ephesians 4:4-6
There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
