Not-So-Quiet-Time: 2 Corinthians 6

At-Home Bible Guide for the Week of 11/8

Day 1: 2 Corinthians 6:1-2
Since we are ambassadors for Christ, our job is to make an appeal on the behalf of Christ. We call out, “Believe in the Lord, you can trust in Him.” And we say, “Today is the day of salvation. Don’t wait.” Do you know someone far from the Lord? Pray that God would give you the chance to share his goodness and proclaim his gospel. And pray that the Holy Spirit would work in mighty ways.

Day 2: 2 Corinthians 6:3-10
One of the great obstacles in the way of people trusting Jesus is hypocritical Christians. But one of the great evidences of the power of God is his ability to change us and to show the fruit of his Spirit in us. Does your life show the power of Christ? Do others see the Spirit changing and growing you? When we live for Him, our lives are characterized “by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left” (6-7).
Ask the Lord to make you an evidence rather than an obstacle for the Good News.

Day 3: 2 Corinthians 6:3-10
This reading is the same as yesterday’s. Why? Because we need to see that God can use any situation and circumstance for his glory. When we endure “in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger,” (4-5) our God shows his goodness to us and to the world. He works “through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise” (8). Pray that God would help you to trust Him in every situation and circumstance.

Day 4: 2 Corinthians 6:11-13
Paul had his heart fully open to the Corinthian church. He loved them. However, they were still holding back. They needed to open up their hearts after a tough time in their relationship with Paul. We need to see that following Jesus restores our relationship with God, and it calls us to right relationship with other believers as well. We can’t hold grudges or nurture bitterness toward others. Conflict happens, but after we speak the truth freely, we must widen our hearts for restoration. Ask God to help you.

Day 5: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
In chapter 5, we read that we are a new creation. How tragic it is when we try to attach the new to the old. So we must not walk in step with those who are not walking toward Christ. We must separate from our old ways and old influences, and journey together with those who are chasing godliness. Pray that God would give you wisdom be yoked only to those who will keep you on his path.

Catechism Connection: 27
God works in others through our “afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger” (4-5). And that is not surprising because it is through Christ’s humiliation that He worked in us. His humiliation “consisted of his being born in a low condition, living under the Law, undergoing the miseries of this life, undergoing the wrath of God and the cursed death of the Cross, and in being buried and continuing under the power of death for a time” (WSC 27).

Monthly Memory: Psalm 34:17-18
17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
